Introduction

This self-paced, on-demand course, Chemistry for Non-Chemists: The Basics, Function, and Language of Chemistry, empowers participants with the essential knowledge to think like a chemist and effectively communicate scientific concepts. The course provides a unique set of activities that facilitate the participant to apply scientific principles to everyday interactions - at home for healthy living and in the workplace for informed decision-making. This course consists of 6 modules of about 30 minutes each. Participants can select modules that are most appropriate to their needs.

Module 1: Matter includes the definition and classification of matter, as well as the definition of mixtures. This module also describes methods for separating mixtures and explains why separations are important. Finally, it provides real-world examples of chemical techniques used to separate mixtures.

Module 2:The Periodic Table and the Atom focuses on the periodic table and the atom and addresses one overarching question: how can the periodic table be used to obtain information, generate predictions, and make decisions?

Module 3: Chemical Bonding focuses on the different types of bonding that occur between atoms depending on the properties of the elements involved in the bonding. It also covers some of the properties of the different compounds based on the type of bonding.

Module 4: Chemical Reactions focuses on chemical reactions, including how chemical bonds and their structure govern the behavior of different types of compounds. It highlights the differences between the products and reactants during a chemical reaction and the different types of reactions.

Module 5: Chemical Equations highlights the information provided in chemical equations and how chemical equations can be used to calculate the amount of reactants needed to produce the desired amount of products.
Module 6: Chemical Safety offers a broad view of chemistry that includes the scientific method, and the importance of chemical safety.
